George graduated from Kenly High School and attended Atlantic Christian College in Wilson. He was a mail carrier with the United States Post Office for 41 years.

George played a major part in his community He was a member of the Kenly American Legion Post 328 and served as treasurer for several years. George was also a member and past master of the Kenly Masonic Lodge, as well as being a member of the Sudan Shrine Temple. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in both America and Europe during World War II. He was instrumental in several building projects around Kenly.

Mr. Pope was an active member of the Kenly Missionary Baptist Church. Not only did he serve as deacon, but he worked on many committees, such as Building, Grounds and several others. He also helped construct part of the parsonage and renovate the church's fellowship hall.

When he wasn't working, George enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, gardening, playing bridge and reading.
