Phillips, Charles and Grey

Daughter of Marvin and Katie Trufenia Gay Shackelford

Charles and Grey were married on January 6, 1950. Charles grew up in Kenly and Grey was raised in Green County. Grey met Charles while she was attending Kings Business College in Raleigh. On June 19, 1956 a daughter, Susan Grey Phillips, was born.

Mr. Phillips felt strongly about serving his community. He was active with the local fire and rescue service as well as the only ambulance driver before a formal rescue service was started. Charles was dedicated to his work at the local funeral home for 60 years. He served in the Navy from 1942-1944 as a cook on a Naval base in California and Hawaii. Some of his achievements include the 2009 Lifetime of Community Service award presented by the Kenly Chamber of Commerce, he also served 16 years on the North Carolina Funeral Service Licensing Board as Executive Director. He is the only living Charter member of both the Kenly American Legion and Kenly Fire Department. He is currently an active member of the Kenly Masonic Lodge, North Carolina Shriners and the Kenly United Methodist Church. In his spare time he enjoys fishing, baseball, golf and collecting coins and clocks. He attended one year at Elon College prior to attending Gupton-Jones College in Nashville, TN for Embalming.

Mrs. Phillips was strongly dedicated to her family and made a great impact on her daughter, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. She was an early member of the Kenly American Legion Auxiliary and an active member of the Kenly United Methodist Church. Grey worked for the US Department of Agriculture in Raleigh and Wilson. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, sewing and cooking.
