In Memory of James Arthur Lucas, Sr.
James Arthur Lucas, Sr. was born on January 23, 1924, in Wilson County, North Carolina to Myrtle Lane Barnes Lucas and Leon Arthur Lucas. He spent most of his young years growing up in Lucama, North Carolina, with his brothers Eugene B. Lucas and Edward Thomas (Tom) Lucas and his sisters Elizabeth (Bett) Lucas McKeel and Lee Lucas Whitaker.
After graduating from Lucama High School, he joined the U. S. Army Air Corp where he was a tail gunner in World War II. He flew 51 combat missions over Northern Africa and Italy before being honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant.
Upon returning to the United States, he enrolled as a freshman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated from there with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce in 1949. While in Chapel Hill, he met Marie Johnson whom he married on December 23, 1948.
He went to work for the Internal Revenue Service in Shelby, North Carolina, after graduating from the university. He worked with the Internal Revenue Service in Shelby, Charlotte, Greensboro, and Raleigh prior to his retirement in 1966 to open his own CPA firm in Raleigh. James A. Lucas and Company, LLP , Certified Public Accountants, was opened in 1966 and still serves its clients today from one office in Raleigh and one office in Garner. Their Raleigh address is 4909 Western Boulevard, Raleigh, North Carolina 27606.
From 1955 until February 23, 1998, when he passed away, Mr. and Mrs. Lucas lived in Garner where they raised their children. Their three children are: James A Lucas, Jr. born September 13,1951; Kenneth A Lucas, born August 16,1954; and Janie B. Lucas Timberlake born July 19,1956. Mr. and Mrs. Lucas have two grandchildren; James Adam Lucas born May 30,1977, and David Carlton Timberlake, Jr. born April 16, 1993.
