IN HONOR
We, the 1963 graduating class from Kenly High School, gave this page honoring Mr. and Mrs. Long at the time of our class reunion in May, 1989. Our beloved classmate and friend, Martha Ann Long, was their daughter.

Minnie and Burke Long's greatest contribution to the Kenly Community lies in the excellent educational leadership they gave at Kenly High School. Many area citizens profit today from the dedicated instruction and high standards set by Mr. and Mrs. Long.

Mrs. Long graduated from Weeksville High School in 1932, attended East Carolina Teacher's College in Greenville from 1932-1934, and received her AB degree from there in 1967. She began her teaching career at Walstonburg High School in 1934. Mrs.. Long came to Kenly High School in 1935 where she taught fifth through eighth grades until her retirement in June, 1979.

While she was a teacher, Mrs. Long also served as a Girl Scout leader in the Kenly community. She is a member of the Kenly Methodist Church, the Pierian Book Club, and the Colonial Dames of XVII Century for which she has served as treasurer for eight years.

Mr. Long graduated from Gastonia High School in 1924, obtained his AB degree from Erskine College, Due West, S.C., in 1928; and received his ME and Principal's Certificate from UNC - Chapel Hill. After teaching in Gaston County for several years, he became principal at Rutherford College for one year before becoming principal at Kenly High School in 1938. He became an assistant superintendent of Johnston County Schools in 1963. He was later made an associate superintendent. Mr. Long's retirement in 1973 ended a forty-five year career in education.

Mr. Long was a member of the Kenly Presbyterian Church and the Kiwanis Club. His interests included sports; hunting and fishing; nature; and reading.
