Kirby, Wallace Reid

July 18, 1926 - November 16, 1990

Wallace Reid Kirby was the son of Howard F. and Viola Watson Kirby. He was born in the St. Mary's community and attended school there. He graduated from Lucama High School and Atlantic Christian College. He received his master's degree in education at East Carolina University.

He taught seventh grade at Aulander School in Bertie County before joining the Kenly School faculty in 1953 as an eighth grade teacher. He was principal of Kenly Elementary School from 1963 until his retirement in May 1980. Over the years, he coached Kenly High School's varsity girls' basketball team.

He was a member of St. Mary's Free Will Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School for 30 years. He married Elizabeth Hill on May 19, 1961. They lived at Kirby's Crossing, where Mrs. Kirby still resides.
